That Fatal Mailing List #48: "I Still Miss Someone" (2005)
What could anyone possibly write to capture a Johnny Cash song, covered by Emmylou Harris and Elvis Costello at a sweaty dark club in Memphis, TN? Better to get the fuck out of the way and let the music play.
I suppose a few facts won’t hurt.
“I Still Miss Someone” was written by Cash and his nephew Roy, appearing as the B-side on his 1958 single “Don’t Take Your Guns to Town.”
It was a popular live choice for Cash, perhaps most famously in his appearance at Folsom Prison in 1968.
Cash performed the song with Bob Dylan in an unused version meant for Nashville Skyline. (This was finally released officially in 2019’s installment of The Bootleg Series.)
Cash and Dylan also performed the song backstage in 1966, as documented in the notorious and unreleased film Eat the Document.
The song has charted four separate times in four separate versions by four different artists.
EC and Emmylou performed the song in 2005 for Club Date: Live in Memphis, a live DVD filmed in 2004 at the Hi-Tone Cafe in Memphis, TN.
